A word on mint and spice

Sweet, sour, bitter, umami, salty. These are tastes detected by our tongue.

Depending on how much of your sense of smell you have lost, you lose some, a lot, or all of your ability to detect flavor.

There is a difference between flavor and sensation. Your olfactory nerve detects flavor, and is the reason you know the difference between chocolate and vanilla, chicken and fish, apple pie and peach pie.

Your trigeminal nerve detects cooling and heating sensations, like mint (menthol) and spice (capsaicin). Many mistake detecting them for smelling them, and think that their sense of smell is returning. However and again, flavor =/= sensation.
